The American butterfish, also known as the Atlantic butterfish, is a butterfish of the family Stromateidae.

The American butterfish is a common and important food source along the Atlantic coast.

The American, or Atlantic, butterfish lives along the Atlantic coast of North America, from the Gulf of St. Lawrence south to Florida. It prefers sandy bottoms and often comes close to shore in summer, moving to deeper water of 200 m or more in winter.
