Description

Haemulon melanurum, the cottonwick grunt, is a species of ray-finned fish within the family Haemulidae. The species is found inhabiting tropical waters in the western Atlantic near parts of North and South America.

The cottonwick is a tropical grunt of the western Atlantic, found from northern Brazil up to southeastern Florida and Veracruz, plus southeastern Texas and Bermuda. It lives in clear water down to about 50 m, alongside reefs, seagrass beds, and shipwrecks.
