Description
The lookdown is a species of game fish in the family Carangidae. It was first described in 1758 by Carl Linnaeus, in the 10th edition of Systema Naturae.
The lookdown has excellent-flavored flesh and is sold fresh, though it's only a minor commercial catch and is taken mostly as a gamefish.
Lookdowns live in the western Atlantic from Canada and Maine south to Uruguay, including Bermuda and the Gulf of Mexico. They favor coastal marine and brackish water at about 1 to 53 m over hard or sandy bottoms, and juveniles use estuaries and sandy beaches.
Also known as
- Moonfish
- Horsehead

Warnings & Kosher Issues
- Lookdown is a jack (Carangidae) with fins and scales, so it is kosher.
- Looks much like the Atlantic moonfish (Selene setapinnis). The lookdown is told apart by the long second rays on its dorsal and anal fins.
