Description
Scad are small, oily jacks eaten widely, often grilled, fried, or dried and salted. They're popular and cheap in many coastal cuisines, and smaller ones double as bait.
Scad are several small fish in the jack family (Carangidae), including the genera Decapterus (round scad), Trachurus (horse mackerel), and Selar. They're fast schooling fish of coastal and offshore waters across warm and temperate seas.
Also known as
- Round scad
- Horse mackerel
- Goggle-eye

Warnings & Kosher Issues
- Kosher. Scad are jacks, which have fins and scales. Jacks carry small scales plus bony scutes along the lateral line.
- As oily fish, scad can cause scombroid (histamine) poisoning if they aren't chilled quickly after the catch.
