Several temperate basses support commercial and sport fisheries and aquaculture, and they are well regarded as food fish.

The European seabass ranges along coasts and estuaries from Norway to north Africa and into the Mediterranean and Black Sea, while the Morone species (striped, white, and yellow bass and white perch) live in eastern North America in both salt and fresh water.
