Description

Salps are barrel-shaped, gelatinous tunicates that live in the open ocean across equatorial, temperate, and cold seas, often in long, stringy chains. They're most abundant in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica. A salp moves by pumping water through its body, one of the most efficient examples of jet propulsion in the animal kingdom, and filters out phytoplankton as it goes.
