Alligator
Alligator mississippiensis
The American alligator, sometimes referred to as a common alligator or just gator, is a large crocodilian reptile native to the Southeastern United States. It is one of the two extant species in the genus Alligator, and is larger than the only other living alligator species, the Chinese alligator.
Alligator meat is eaten across the American South, often as fried nuggets, in gumbo, or grilled. The tail meat is the most prized cut.
The American alligator lives in fresh and brackish wetlands, swamps, rivers, and lakes across the southeastern United States, from the Carolinas to Texas and especially Florida and Louisiana. It's farmed and harvested under regulated seasons.
