Description

Anglerfish in the family Lophiidae are sold as monkfish or goosefish, and the tail meat is widely cooked and often compared to lobster in taste and texture. In Japan the liver, called ankimo, is a delicacy, and South Korea uses anglerfish in dishes like agujjim.

Anglerfish occur worldwide. Most are bottom-dwelling fish, with some deep-sea species living in open water and others, like the frogfishes and some batfishes, in shallower water. Deep-sea anglerfish use a glowing lure tipped with bioluminescent bacteria to draw in prey.
