Calicobass

Calico bass usually means kelp bass on the Pacific coast, considered excellent eating and a top California game fish. The same name is also used for black crappie, a popular freshwater panfish.

The name covers two fish. Kelp bass is a marine sea bass of the eastern Pacific, from central California to southern Baja. Black crappie is a North American freshwater sunfish found across the lower 48 states.
