Description
Coregonus artedi, commonly known as the cisco, is a North American species of freshwater whitefish in the family Salmonidae. The number of species and definition of species limits in North American ciscoes is a matter of debate.
Cisco is a food fish, often salted or smoked, and its roe has become popular as caviar in Scandinavian cooking. Smaller fish are also sold as bait.
The cisco is a North American freshwater whitefish of cold lakes, and large rivers in the northern and western part of its range. It lives in open midwater and supports commercial fisheries in the Great Lakes, especially Lakes Superior and Huron.
