Description

The Atlantic halibut is a flatfish of the family Pleuronectidae. They are demersal fish living on or near sand, gravel or clay bottoms at depths of between 50 and 2,000 m.

Halibut is a prized food fish with firm white flesh. It's eaten as fillets or steaks and can be smoked, and Pacific Coast native groups traditionally smoke and dry it for winter.

Atlantic halibut live in the North Atlantic from Greenland and Labrador to Virginia, and from Iceland and the British Isles to Russia, on the ocean floor at 50 to 2,000 meters. Pacific halibut live on the continental shelf of the North Pacific and Bering Sea, with most fishing in the Gulf of Alaska, the Bering Sea, and off western Canada.

Warnings & Kosher Issues
  • Kosher. Halibut has fins and scales (small scales embedded in the skin).
  • Atlantic halibut has been on the endangered species list since 1996 due to overfishing.
  • Fish labeled halibut is often a different large flatfish, so the name can be loose.
