Description

The hogchoker (Trinectes maculatus) is a small flatfish of the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the Americas, from Massachusetts to Venezuela. It favors brackish water and is common in bays and estuaries, with large fish turning up well up the Mississippi, Hudson, and East Rivers.

Also known as

  • Freshwater flounder
  • Freshwater fluke
  • American sole
Warnings & Kosher Issues
  • Sold in aquarium stores as a freshwater flounder or freshwater fluke, which isn't accurate. It's an estuarine fish, not a true freshwater species.
  • It's an American sole. Some flatfish in this group have reduced or rough scales, so a kosher buyer should confirm true scales on the specific fish before relying on it.
