Description
The Atlantic menhaden is a North American species of fish in the herring family, Alosidae.
Atlantic menhaden aren't eaten directly today and go mostly into fish oil, fish meal, and bait. Historically some people fried them like sardines.
Atlantic menhaden range along North Atlantic coastal and estuarine waters from Nova Scotia south to northern Florida. They're common across all salinities of Chesapeake Bay and the Mid-Atlantic, with younger fish in southern bays and older fish along northern coasts.
Also known as
- American Sardine
- Hard-head
