Description

Mullet are an important food fish, eaten around the Mediterranean since Roman times, including the salted dried roe sold as bottarga (Italian), karasumi (Japanese), and avgotaraho (Greek). Fried mullet is most popular, but it's also smoked, baked, and canned.

Mullet live worldwide in coastal temperate and tropical waters, with some species in fresh water. They tolerate fresh, brackish, and marine habitats, often entering estuaries and rivers, from the surface down to about 120 m.
