Description
Orthopristis chrysoptera, the pigfish, hogfish, piggy perch, redmouth grunt or sailor's choice, is a species of marine ray-finned fish, a grunt belonging to the family Haemulidae. It is found in the western Atlantic Ocean.
Pigfish is normally sold fresh. It's a modest food and bait fish along the U.S. coast.
Pigfish live in the western Atlantic from Massachusetts to Florida and into the Gulf of Mexico, plus the Yucatan, Cuba, and Bermuda. They're found at about 1 to 20 m in estuaries and bays over sand or silt, and around jetties, reefs, oil rigs, and shell banks.

Warnings & Kosher Issues
- Pigfish is a grunt with fins and scales (the body is scaled apart from the snout tip, lips, and chin), so it is kosher.
