Description
Porgies and sea breams are popular table fish. The most prized for cooking are the gilt-head bream and the common dentex.
The Sparidae live in tropical and temperate coastal waters around the world. They are mostly demersal fish of the continental shelf and slope, and some tolerate brackish water with a few entering fresh water.

Warnings & Kosher Issues
- Sparidae have fins and scales (smooth cycloid to weakly ctenoid), so porgies and sea breams are kosher.
- Sheepshead is a shared name. In this family it means the sheepshead seabream (Archosargus probatocephalus), not the freshwater drum that is also called sheepshead.
