Poutassou
Micromesistius poutassou
The blue whiting one of the two species in the genus Micromesistius in the order of Gadiformes, which also contains cod, haddock, whiting, and pollock. It is common in the northeast Atlantic Ocean from Morocco to Iceland and Spitsbergen.
Blue whiting is rarely sold fresh. Most of the catch becomes fishmeal and oil, though it is eaten fresh and frozen in parts of Russia, southern Europe, and Japan.
Blue whiting is common in the northeast Atlantic from Morocco to Iceland and Spitsbergen, and in the northern Mediterranean where it can be locally abundant. It also turns up between Canada and Greenland, though it is rare there. It is a heavily fished commercial species in European and Russian waters.
