Description

The tiger shark is a species of ground shark, and the only extant member of the genus Galeocerdo and family Galeocerdonidae. It is a large predator, with females capable of attaining a length of over 5 m.

Tiger sharks are caught and killed for their fins, flesh, and liver. The liver carries a high concentration of vitamin A that's used to make vitamin oils.

Tiger sharks are usually found close to the coast in tropical and subtropical waters worldwide, from Japan to New Zealand in the western Pacific, plus the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, and the coasts of Africa, India, and Australia. They've been recorded at depths approaching 900 m.
