Description
The European conger is a species of conger of the family Congridae. It is the heaviest eel in the world and native to the northeast Atlantic, including the Mediterranean Sea.
One species, the whitespotted conger (Conger myriaster), is an important food fish in East Asia and is often served as sushi.
The European conger lives in the eastern Atlantic from Norway and Iceland down to Senegal, plus the Mediterranean and Black Sea. It favors rough, rocky ground and can sit anywhere from the shallows to about 500 meters down, with young fish staying close to shore and adults moving deeper.
