Warnings & Kosher Issues
- Scombrids are bony fish with fins and scales, so mackerels and tunas are kosher.
- Scombroid (histamine) poisoning risk if the fish isn't refrigerated quickly after catch, and cooking won't destroy the toxin. Tuna, mackerel, and bonito are commonly implicated.
- Larger tunas and king mackerel can carry higher mercury levels.
