A rarely documented isolated population also exists in the Gulf of California, which might be genetically different from the rest of the species.
Opaleye are a Pacific sea chub of shallow saltwater. They range in the eastern Pacific from San Francisco down to Baja California and are most abundant south of Point Conception. They live over rocks and kelp beds from about 1 to 32 m deep and are caught mainly by recreational anglers.
