Plaice
Pleuronectes platessa (European) / Hippoglossoides platessoides (American)
The European plaice, commonly referred to as simply plaice, or schol in Dutch, is a species of marine flatfish in the genus Pleuronectes of the family Pleuronectidae.
European plaice is filleted, battered, and pan-fried, popular hot or cold as an open-sandwich topping with remoulade and lemon. It also goes into fish and chips and breaded frozen fillets.
European plaice lives on sandy and muddy bottoms, usually at 10 to 200 m. It ranges from the Barents Sea to the Iberian Peninsula and around Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Young fish stay in shallow estuaries and along sandy coasts.
