Sirajo goby
Not Kosher
Description
The fry of these river gobies are a local delicacy in the Caribbean and elsewhere, harvested in huge numbers as they swarm upriver and eaten as tiny whole fish in fritters and patties (known as tritri or ceti).
Sirajo gobies are gobies in the genus Sicydium, which live in fast-flowing streams and rivers of the Americas, the Caribbean, and parts of West Africa. Sicydium plumieri is the species specifically called sirajo.
Warnings & Kosher Issues
- Not kosher when in doubt. Goby scales vary by species. Ask a trusted rabbi.
- Gobies in this genus have scales, which would make them kosher, but goby scales can be small and the broader goby families include some scaleless species. Check the specific fish before relying on it.
- Don't confuse 'sirajo goby' with scaleless goby relatives. Scale presence varies across goby families.
