Description
Spearing (Atlantic silverside) is a small fish eaten raw or fried in batter, and it is a delicacy in some countries like Portugal. It is also a common bait fish.
The Atlantic silverside lives in estuaries and brackish water along the Atlantic coast of North America, from the Gulf of St. Lawrence to northeastern Florida. It schools in shallow water near seagrass in summer and moves to deeper, warmer water offshore in winter.
