Description

The tautog, also known as the blackfish, is a species of wrasse native to the western Atlantic Ocean from Nova Scotia to South Carolina. This species inhabits hard substrate habitats in inshore waters at depths from 1 to 75 m.

Tautog is white, firm, and delicately flavored. It can be grilled, baked, or used in fish chowder, and it was long a favorite table fish in New York.

The tautog lives over hard bottom in inshore western Atlantic waters from Nova Scotia to South Carolina, in depths from about 1 to 75 meters. It hides among rocks, reefs, and wrecks, which makes it a target for anglers and divers.
