The photo gallery loads over the internet, so it only shows when you are online. This is by design, and it keeps the apps small and fast.
What loads online versus offline #
- Online: the full photo gallery, with real images of the fish alive, on ice, as a fillet, and cooked.
- Always available: the blue sketch illustration, the kosher status, the fins-and-scales checklist, the description, and the foreign-language names. These work offline, including in the mobile apps.
What you see when offline #
If you open a fish without a connection, the gallery shows a short note that photos load when you are connected. Everything you actually need to make a kosher call is still right there. The photos are a bonus for recognizing the fish, not the basis for the answer.
Why it is built this way #
Real photos are large files. Bundling hundreds of them into the apps would make the download huge and the apps slow. Loading photos on demand keeps the apps light enough to work well at the fish counter, where the kosher answer is what matters most.
When photos are not loading #
If the photo gallery is blank or stuck, the cause is almost always the internet connection. The gallery loads photos online only, by design.
Check these first #
- Are you online? The gallery needs a connection. Reconnect and the photos should appear.
- Using the app offline? That is the most common reason. You will see a note that photos load when you are connected. The kosher answer, checklist, and illustration still work.
- Slow connection? Give the photos a moment to load over a weak signal.
This is not a bug #
The site and apps keep the core data (status, fins and scales, description, foreign names, and the blue sketch) available without internet. Only the real-photo gallery loads on demand. If everything else is showing and just the photos are not, the system is working as intended. Reconnect to see them.
